The world stopped when Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills collapsed on the field with a medical emergency live on television. The discourse around this event was rapid and many had speculations on what was occurring live, but one thing was for certain – for those long minutes, Hamlin’s life was in first responders’ hands.:. “In sports medicine, you don’t really know until you reach the athlete whether you’re walking into a simple injury such as an ankle sprain or a more emergent situation such as a c-spine injury or cardiac arrest.” Said Kylie Hynes, a Sports Medicine professional. The second an athlete goes down the athletic trainer and/or other sports medicine professional are assessing the situation on the way out to the athlete to determine what they might be walking into and what steps need to be taken to provide appropriate care fast.
Although a lot of help comes from a first responder, they need the supplies and equipment to enable them to provide quality care for injured athletes. “You always want to have wound care supplies, gloves, gauze and band-aids as well as tape and trauma shears. Having a well-stocked bag prepares you for an emergency. It is so important to make sure you have everything for the worst-case scenario so that you are prepared,” Hynes emphasized.
When it comes to a medical kit, Hynes looks for quality/durability and ease of transportation. “In the athletic setting we often travel far from the locker-room to the field. Having a bag that is easy to transport (wheeled bags are a lifesaver for our backs!) makes all the difference. I also look for quality and weather durability for those rainy/snowy days.”
This is one of the many reasons why Thermal Custom Packaging (TCP) created the MedShield medical case to provide a waterproof and dustproof safe harbor for the essential first aid supplies and equipment needed in emergency situations. A well-built emergency bag is of utmost importance, with its main goal being durability and easy transportation of necessary supplies. A MedShield can fit and organize many different first aid products, AEDs, medicine for certain pre-existing conditions such as Diabetes and other hardware tools. When designing the MedShield, we wanted to make sure everything was easily accessible, no matter what type of emergency was occurring. Hynes shared how she would utilize a MedShield, “I would pack it with the most used supplies in the main compartments so that they are easily accessible. Some of the smaller less frequently used items could go in smaller compartments and I would make sure anything for an emergency situation is easily accessible.”. MedShields are completely customizable, inside and out, making them the perfect carrying case for a multitude of different sports.
While the MedShield is important, as a Doctor founded company, TCP’s goal is always to prevent injuries from occurring in the first place. Hynes has seen many injuries throughout her career but overall, the most common are ankle sprains, ACL tears, and overuse. i. To help prevent injuries, Hynes recommends that every athlete should take care of your body before and after activity, making sure you haveproper warm ups and cool downs, stretching, etc.. Also, diet, nutrition, hydration and recovery play a huge role in injury prevention. Make sure you are eating enough for the activity you are doing.”
